Check my profile. One of the threads has explanations on how to do it.

Theoretically yes, but it's tricky to master and if the defending side can wriggle away from it a bit here and there then you might hit a draw under the 50 move rule.

woah! you asked about a game in progress....thats not good (for the record you don't want to do that. The mods won't go anything, but idiots will spam you for pages to come!)

it's not that hard if someone talks you through it, and you take a little time to work on it. and after you blitz it against fritz for a couple of days, you can do it in 20 seconds. when you know what you're doing there's even time to let the defender slip away once before you hit the 50 move limit.

I learned it from dragon fire's example, but here's also a post I did about it at the time. it's a detailed description of how to mate with KNB vs K:

That's what I thought at first but I had a quick look at Drews games in progress before posting and couldn't see any with this ending.

20 seconds! I'll give the blitzing v computer method a try. BTW I love this ending as I find the mating net really pretty and it's an education in co-ordinating pieces... but the book "Silmans Endgame Course" doesn't even show it, saying it's to rare to bother with.

I think he wanted to know if it is possible to mate so he resign or offer draw.
Think of the bright side 🙂

His question was NOT about a game in progress. Just a simple one about a type of endgame.

really? then I must wonder if silman ever taught it to himself. 🙂 that's a weird omission in an otherwise pretty comprehensive endgame book. and even if you'll run into it only once or twice in your life, I think it's still a part of the craft, and a very beneficial exercise in piece coordination and board vision.

if you have an ICC account, there's a special KNB bot just for drilling the mate. chessmaster also has a special exercise for it.

in fact, I'm gonna go drill it a couple of times right now myself, as I'm sure I've become a bit rusty on it by now...

My thoughts exactly re the Silman book...had a quick look over my ICC account but can't find the KNB bot on (I'm using a Jin interface from my Mac)...any suggestions how I might find it?
