anyway, whats with bumping old dead threads?
I didn't. Someone hauled me over the coals because my thread had a typo in it, so I stand corrected.

Threads on basic endings are never dead as unfortunately the same questions come up every few months.

Why don't you tell newbies how to get here from my starting position (pieces on original squares).[/b]
Because your starting position is one of the easiest from which to mate as Black's King is already on the edge of the board.
White does not need the King, and has two ways to mate in two : -
A/ 1. Ra7 Kd8 or f8 2. Rh8 mate.
B/ 1. Rh7 Kd8 or f8 2. Ra8 mate.

Not it is not. This was a mate in the middle of the board, not on the edge. Why don't you look at the whole post rather than quote a bit of it out of context?

Which makes it 6 not 5 moves.

Although I agree compared to my 7 it is 1 move quicker.

I was not, however, trying to show the quickest way to mate just the method and I actually deliberately showed the longer route because I felt that was getting the principles across.

Thi is getting a bit picky, but
1. ... Kf7
2. Rh6 Kg7
3. Rb6
4. Ra7+
5. Rb8++
is still five moves. Same principle though - just more direct. But thanks for the thread.
There are lots of the same questions repeated all the time which is why a couple of years ago I suggested a FAQ answering the most common questions. Russ was/is happy to host it, but no one else showed any interest. Any takers this time?

EDIT: Must have been because it was Christmas: Thread 35064
