Originally posted by LanndonKaneIf you just play without analyzing your games, it will probably never happen. If you analyze and try to figure out tactical and strategical principles on your own, I guess it should be doable to increase 300 points. How long it takes will depend on how much time you spend on it, how well you spend that time, and how talented you are. But I would really recommend that you learn some basic stuff from tutorials or books, as that will make your progress a lot faster and make playing more fun (at least in my experience). If you don't want to buy books or software (Chessmaster 10th Edition has a great tutorial), you can find a lot of stuff on the internet.
I've been playing chess for 8 years, but ive started to play much more since last December 2005. How long, on average, does it take for your rating to increase 300 points, just by playing games (no books or lessons).

Originally posted by wormwoodWell, technically, ive been playing for 8 years, but up until December 2005 ive only been moving pieces randomly, not caring what the outcome of my moves would be (i used to hate chess, and only played because my grandfather liked it.) Still, becoming a 1600 in 9 months is very impressive.

Some players learn by playing, but they also get advice from other players, and from making mistakes in their games, and learning from it.
I know of a player on ICC, who got to 2200 in blitz, and is now around 1700, He has played about 150,000 games.
I dont think this person has found the time to study, and thus the rating doesnt go up too much.
I recently got to new highs in ICC, and have gotten over 1700 here, after being 1500-1600 for most of the time.
I beleive its because i studied a lot the past few months.
You need to study, period.
The more you study, the more you know, the better you get.
Tactics will help your rating. 300 points is doable with just tactics.
If you want to get higher after that, go over master games, endgames, postional, etc
