Maximum 5 minutes and then give up. Chances are that if you don't find it by then, you won't.
After doing a few of these you will eventually catch on. The ones I am posting aren't that easy actually.
Winning Chess Tactics by GM Yasser Seirwan is a great book and has great puzzles in it. You should check that out.
Do you want easier puzzles? I can send you a link.
I did consider the answer to that position on puzzle 3, but only far enough to see black go a pawn down. Just didn't see that second fork.
Yeah, these are really like positions from games. The mate puzzles are often artificial. Though my coach gives me mate in 7's to solve and some of them are artificial but some are from real games. But they all are really forced with few variations, so despite the number of moves required, they're quite easy to solve.
Originally posted by kbaumenI used to mate and combination puzzles for my tactic program but I didn't like the mate ones to much. They were forced like you mentioned but that rarely happens in real games. You can't use them to much in a real game but combinations you can use in almost every game.

Originally posted by RahimKThis is much easier then the previous ones, so I won't post the answer assuming that there are people who find it challenging. I can PM it to you, if you want to.
Puzzle 5. From a blitz game I just played:
[fen]4r1k1/pp3ppp/3R1b2/2p5/8/P4B1P/5PP1/6K1 b - - 0 24[/fen]
Black to move.

White to move.
After doing so many puzzles, you start to do them instantly because of Pattern Recognition. Hence, Puzzle 5 occured in my blitz game and I found it instantly because I still remeber the pattern.
Originally posted by RahimKYeah, patterns similar to those of puzzles often occur in games.

Here the pattern is similar to the previous puzzle. Just some exchanges needed before, so a bit harder to notice the pattern.
