White to play

Material is even here, Black is threatening to win a pawn and is defending his weak pawn at the same time. White to play.

1.Qe5+ looks very strong for white here, probably winning.

Qe5+ is the right move here, but why. And what are some squares whites queen would like to go to, depending on where black moves his king.

Kh2 may be even better.

It doesn't really matter where black puts his king after Qe5+, he's going to lose either his b or f pawn. Also in some lines the white king will combine with the queen to create mating threats.

Well 1.Qe5+ Kh6?? runs mate after 2.Qh8+ Kg5 3.h4+ Kf5 4.Qe5#, no?

I don't see how white can make progress after 1.Qe5+ Kf8 2.Qb8+ Kg7 because 3.Qxb6 probably loses after Qg1!

Knowing that, I also think that 1.Kh2 gives the best chances to get something out of the position. The exchange of white's b-pawn against black's e-pawn is in white's favour.

What happens if white flicks in 2.d5!? (instead of the immediate 2.Qb8+) first in order to create a quick past c pawn?

Interesting idea. But I think that black is still ok. The white king is not safe on g3. For instance 1.Qe5+ Kf8 2.d5 cxd5 3.Qb8+ Kg7 4.Qxb7 Qg1 etc.

Great. You guys noticed that the only way to meet blacks threats where to create threats of your own (checks and winning pawns) and to create bigger threats (checkmate is possible if blacks king goes awry).

Whites king is also not safe either. Black pushed some pawns and made some mate threats I had to watch out for. Here's the game. You can see the how the threats go back and forth.

Well, I'm all out of endgames, so post your own if you want. Also, I've seen a few posts suggesting some simul type games in the forums. Also RahimK talked about posting an even position and then seeing how you go about winning it. So what do you guys think about playing some games of the forums vs 1 person? Maybe setting up an even endgame and then trying to win it?
