I only learnt how to post after three years. Another six months and I had found the edit button.

You forget it is possible to see what is going on from outside this site. Also, new member here does not mean new to the internet or even new to internet chess. I know how to post because a) this site has a nice intuitive forum set up and b) I am not new to internet forums (fora if you insist) and this forum works much the same as any of a squillion other internet forums.

Yes, these online chess sites seem littered with mathematicians who play the modern defence...

Really? I thought I was unique. I do think that describing me as a mathematician might be a little strong though, I doubt most real mathematicians would agree. I use mathematics on a daily basis but don't make new mathematics. Applied mathematician? Applier of mathematics? Geologist or geophyicist or earth scientist would be closer to the truth. I am paid to look at rocks and work out what they tell us about conditions in the past.

My black opening choice goes through phases. Currently I can't be assed to fiddle with the theory in defences against all the moves white can make so I play g6. From there I can go to a Kings Indian or Pirc or Sicilian if I feel so inclined. Or I could just stick with the modern and hope my opponent doesn't know what he is doing.

Fancy making some inferences from my choice of white opening or the colour of my socks? Grey today, by the way.

and I'm not dead (I think)

Being me doesn't necessarily mean being Greek or dead. I am neither, my user name here is both. He also invented a symbolic system that we might consider to be algebra so he deserves to be one.
