You're confusing the world of the GM with the world of the ordinary chess player where it makes no difference. I think I've hit about my ceiling (1 800) and if I play someone with a rating 200 points above me, I lose playing black or white. And the frustrating thing is there's nothing I can do about it.

Why mess with the system? We're not good enough for the move advantage to make a difference.

I just checked my own stats, and I'm actually doing a little better as black than as white in the 400 games I've completed thus far.
The difference is minimal though, so it may even out over time.

then what? nobody forces you to play.

if you guys suck with black pieces it is your problem, dont blame anything else. white advantage is so slight, that it should not make difference...at least at that level we patzers are playing.
I've added half a dozen Open Invites where I'd play as Black for anyone who cares to use their White "advantage" against me. 🙂

They've all been snapped up straight away by p1200 players who joined today. I never realised Open Invites were so popular?

They are, because of the privilege, although there may be one or two sleepers. Tell us how many you kill in 10 moves or less ...

Most of my open invites since I started playing here have been titled "black is okay" with me as black. I've won more than my share.

Yes, white has the advantage; but chess is about as near even as you can get. When you start manipulating ratings to compensate, you create more problems than you solve. Efforts to alter the value of the draw (such as giving black 0.6 and white 0.4) are even worse.

The poster said it himself when he said, "between equal players it is generally accepted that the best black can hope for is a draw. ", he said right there the game was even.

Chess is even from the start, someone has to blunder for either side to win.

IIRC it was an unfair "advantage" for black that eventually caused white to always go first in a game. It used to be common practise that fate had to decide which player would start the game (rolling dice). So, sometimes white moved first, sometimes black. Problem was that black was considered the "lucky" color at that time.

Playing a game with black (with Fortuna on your side) *and* being the one to start the game was just overkill 🙂 So, just to compensate, it was decided that white should start from that time on.

(There's a Dutch proverb: "Wit begint, en zwart wint" ("White begins and black wins" ) that could be a result of that, but I believe it originated from the checkers world instead. Someone know for sure?)

white has no advantage at all if:
both players are less than 2000 and not using opening databases.

but:

if the white player uses an opening database ... then even a weak player may wander into a draw against ironman and have no idea of what they just did.

other strong players will also use this (and presumably ironman too)

but ...

they could never pull this off as black ...

the skillful player has too many options and decimates the less skillful.

white has an advantage - the use of opening databases accentuates this.

and so: draws as white against higher rated players should count for little in an opening-database-using situation.

Trust me, that won't ever happen. Databases are of little use if there are no annotations. That's why you should always check if what you are doing is right - even if the game you are following is won for you. players like IM always will find an improvement on the line.
