why, what did he do? he wore a mask for the flu?

If I understand your question it had more to do with Capablanca not being a nice guy. I think the player in question is Nimzowitsch and not Rubenstein. Try key word search "capablanca one tough cuban".

Didn't they say Rubinstein was paranoid?

It doesn't change my idea of Capa being my favorite! It's not a personality flaw to be a tough Cuban! What I meant is that Kasparov can be an immature cry baby sometimes. Like when his opponent won the brilliancy prize for winning him in a tournament and ending his streak with white. He made a huge scene at the awards ceremony. Or when he lost to Deep Blue while playing his worst chess ever.

My point is that Capa is freakin cool man!

I do not know about that. Rubinstein sufferd from anthropophobia or a fear of people and society. It has been said that he had schizophrenic tendencies. As his mental problems progressed it affected his tournament chess playing ability. Even with this handicap Rubinstein was a very strong GM level player and could have beaten Lasker and Capablanca in a title match. One web page states that he won 32 1st place in 74 tournaments and that he won 6 1st place and 5 1st place consecutively.

He was world class, but could have beaten Capa in a title match? Yeah... right...

I'm inclined think that it would have been an awesome match, and I certainly do not think Rubinstein's chances would be worse than even. Back then the best challenger didn't automatically get to challenge the Champ, and I definitely think Rubinstein was avoided when he was at his peak.

He was a generation ahead when it came to endgame play, and it is not by accident that he still has topical variations of the Nimzo Indian and French named after him.

kasparov went after an ex-kgb dictator with a public campaign in a country where dissidents get killed on their door steps. what did capa ever do to deserve being called 'tough'? played a board game in a 'tough' way? come on.

What Capablanca called tough the law calls battery and terrorist threatenings.

then he went back to sipping his candy colored drink from a coconut with a pink umbrella on a paradise beach under a palm tree. smelling of roses. while kasparov was moving his family out of russia because of thinly veiled threats from the dictator. knee-deep in radioactive snow, while keeping the wolves away with one hand and drinking vodka from a bloody bear skull in his other hand.

"One tough Cuban" was what Capablanca called himself. I believe Capablanca thought he was tough because he started a few fights and must have won them. I guess he did not know that chess players are not the toughest guys in town. Capablanca was also arrogant. Most people seem to be too busy damning Alekhine to see that Capablanca was just as bad.
