Does a person live behind the door they are trying to knock on?
(as opposed to a supply closet or hallway or storage/repair area)

Are they able to bring the object (via stairs) to the floor with
the door in question?

Do they have any interest in speaking to anyone behind the doors
they knock on?

Are they soliciting help from the people behind the doors that they
knock on?
