Ha, I was off in such a different direction.... Good one, no less.

There were a lot of misleading questions / answers, as it were.

Well, this was the difficulty I had throughout, trying to keep the situation as I imagined it to be. Remember, the situation is the chess game itself, and revolves around the characters (aka pieces) - not the players. Keeping this in mind, the chess "battle" takes place on a battlefield, with soldiers leaders and weaponary.
