hi guys i'm new here. =) have a riddle for u though *clears throat*:

there is a room with no windows and a light tight door, the door is closed. there is one incandesent light bulb hanging from the ceiling in the room, there are three light switches out side the room, one of them works the light. you can flip the switches as many times as you like in any order, but u may only open the door once, and when the door is open you can't touch the switches.

How do you tell which switch works the light?

hope this is ok for ya =S =D

I have heard this one, and so long as the bulb is within reach, you certainly can determine which switch works it.

The key is to find a way to create 3 possible states in the bulb.

I was giving ppl a chance to respond...oh well.

Three switches:

Switch A.
Switch B.
Switch C.

You leave switch A off. Switch B, you turn on and leave on for a while, but then turn it off. Switch C, you turn on and leave on. Then you walk into the room. If the bulb is out and cold, it belongs to Switch A. If the bulb is out, but hot, it belongs to Switch B. If the bulb is on, it belongs to Switch C.

The three states geep was talking about are on, off, and the heat emission from the bulb, of course. (I think...)

Although, I heard this riddle with three bulbs and you had to find out which bulb belonged with which switch. (Bulbs A, B, and C and Switches A, B, and C.)

(Sorry for the double, just had to answer this one too.)

"Don't sob over spilled milk." is how I learned it.

*nod* Cold, Hot, or On would be my manner of putting it, but you would be correct. I figure I'd only give a small clue though, rather than the outright answer.

Good enough
I was after
"Its no good crying over spilt milk"
which I think is the usual expression (in UK anyway)

I really would hate to answer this one, just because

a) it is too obvious

b) it is a stale oldie. (notice: not a golden oldie, because this one has been heard too much. Ergo, stale.)

"If I was to ask the other guy which way leads safely home, what would he say?"

Then take the OPPOSITE Exit.
