I think its time we had an "Are you dead?" button on here. How many times does a player disappear into thin air from the site, leaving loads of unfinished games and mid-forum conversation, leaving you to think... "I hope he/she hasn't kicked the bucket". NicholaiS is a good example. We were just finishing a couple of very interesting league games, and mid-chat, when he suddenly stopped moving.
It would be good to have an "are you dead" button, similar to the reminder button, which would send a generic email to the user in question. This could be located on the player's profile, and appear after say a month of not moving.
This is mostly in jest, but I always kind of worry when a regular long-timer disappears without word.

OK, how about "Are you in a coma?"

Seriously, I like the idea. Maybe not the "Dead" or "Coma" buttons, but something like a "I could time you out if I wanted to" button. It only shows up once you get a skull. Or it could pop up on a players profile/home page if they don't move in any game in 30 days.
Originally posted by wibWell, see that's the thing. We can already send reminders, but if somebody has just had enough of the site, then they probably won't respond to another form of a reminder because they wouldn't care about their games, whereas something a little more personal might get a response. Also, we have no access to people's personal email addresses, so the "Are you in Hell with demons shoving big red-hot pokers into all of your orifices?" (from http://www.timeforchess.com/board/showthread.php?threadid=20167) button is a good way to send a more personal message without us having to ask Russ for somebody's email, which we wouldn't get.

Originally posted by RagnorakYep, that's what I meant. The "Where are you" button would send an email, via the site's server, to the non-moving player's home email. The sender would never know the email address. You could even have the option to title the email (along the lines of your "red hot poker" title) if you'd like. And of course you could customize the message in the email - "MAKE A MOVE YOU SORRY SACK OF SLUGS!" Or something like that.

Of course that would lead to abusive language, personal emails from God's followers, spam, etc.
So now I've completely talked myself out of it. I'll have no part in this debacle.

"You have run out of time in our game and I have not yet chosen to time you out. Please move in the game immediately or I will time you out."
I don't think this is at all offensive. Anything more is none of our business.

Well I'm agianst it. The unfortunate timing of this idea makes it seem even worse.
If someone abandons the site, they are'nt going to care if you send an email. Now matter how cute/ofensive it is.

EDIT: Oops. Nevermind. I just read FW. Ok, I can see your point, but...
We're just discussing a way of verifying, one last time, if a player is ever going to come back to the site and or move again. For people who time out a player immediately this isn't an issue, but some folks like to wait and give their opponent one last chance before they time them out. That's all.
The whole issue around Time Outs is a bit strange. If the skull appears for you, you have won. Time the opponent out.
It may have been Arrakis who said that it was akin to running out of time on OTB - the person who runs out of time, loses.
However, I can understand that some people may see this as unsportman-like, and they are entitled to that view.
