that's got to be an oxymoron of some sort.

Based on your theory I should get at least eleven rec's.
You'll need to first wait for me to say something stupid, and if 11 people agree... you just might get 11 recs.

I think there is a case for limiting the number of recs which a user can give - a couple a day, perhaps, or 10 per week.

The rec system is popular. People use it, no doubt for different reasons. The fact that a lot of silly posts get recs for what some may consider no good reason is no good reason to scrap the rec system.

I think there is scope for reforming it. Redmike's suggestion is not a bad one. You could also limit the number of times that a player can rec posts from any other player (to stop friends reccing one another all the time - I don't know whether or not this is an issue). You could even put some text near the 'Rec' button saying that we should use this to draw attention to good, witty or informative posts.

Do we really think things like the Carp v. Donkey feud are going to stop just because no recs can be given? That people are going to just stop insulting one another, and resist the temptation of blowing off stress with some good ol' anonymous flaming?

Destroying the rec system only kills a symptom, not the problem.

The very idea that 11 people would agree to give me 11 rec's is a stupid thing to say.

That is exactly the same as what the medical community does. There is no profit in curing a disease only in the treatment. I am sure you have thought of that.
