Before we got the thumbs we had the option to "recommend" which encouraged people to give credit to posts they liked, but didn't give the option to sneer. My personal opinion is that the change was a retrograde step. Thumbs bring the nasty critters out of the woodwork.

Anonymity is a wonderful thing. Replace "party" with "business meeting" and see the difference.

Banal posters also are usually at the top of the 'thread-killer' lists, for exactly the reasons you cite.

What about if you went the opposite way to curtailing and you earned more posting rights in the thread for getting green thumbs up. Ignore the red ones so nobody can get victimized, but run out of posts for that thread if nobody is liking what you are contributing? Maybe start with a given two posts for any thread but get two more available everytime somebody liked seeing you post in it?

This was the "rec" system. It was also abused in other ways.

I think there is next to no abuse in the current system. By attaching detriment of some kind to the number of down thumbs, you introduce a reason for abuse.

This is a strawman.

You only separate posts as to whether they are 'for-you' or 'against-you'. That's not what this discussion is about. It is about people like you who make objectively bad posts because they are selfish.

No one is proposing to introduce censorship or to suppress unpopular opinions. However, yapping up the forums with spam is not expressing an opinion; it's just junk.

If a limit on the max-nr. of posts ...[text shortened]... od would, in addition, impose some discipline on those who cannot or will not discipline themselves.

I would not be against some kind of multi-level ban protocol.

The mods must be fully on board, though.
