More threads and more discussion would be encouraged if
known saboteurs were barred from "contributing". Would it
be a good idea to temporarily bar members from forum after
a certain number of thumbs down per day/week/month?

I suppose you could have something like an automatic two day sin bin (forum only ban) for acquiring ten red thumbs in 24 hours? Short but immediate consequences can be very effective, but it could be open to misuse and then you start to need a referee reviewing the thumbs... I like the idea though if it was trial and review?

I never use the thumb buttons.
Perhaps there's others also so it wouldn't be representative.
I just ignore the saboteurs' posts

I favour a trial run with some arbitrary threshold, either a temporary forum ban, or a max-nr. of posts within a certain time period.

Certainly if you want a little group to dictate who posts and who doesn't!

    Lol, thumbs down mean nothing.

You got over 3 thumbs down Wolf, I guess you need to self ban from this forum.

LOL...........Actually he is up to 4 thumbs down, I completely agree with you on this one!!!! It would be a great way though for the little group to control who posted in the forums!

That is exactly the agenda. Alliances will form, and thought/speech will be censored by a minority of tyrants. I will cancel membership immediately if this hairbrained idea is even considered.

Well, I could have explained how people like myself would just take advantage of it to get people barred from the forums and how we already have mods to remove what they feel is inappropriate. I could also add that most threads get derailed eventually naturally anyway but '$hite ideas' just sounded better.

Well in hindsight I agree it is a poor idea that would be
misused but the objective remains, is there another solution?

With freedom comes also the responsibility to use it well and wisely. However, some people indulge themselves only in the freedom but are less skilled at using it wisely.

No one is proposing to introduce censorship or to suppress unpopular opinions. However, yapping up the forums with spam is not expressing an opinion; it's just junk.

If a limit on the max-nr. of posts within 24 hours were implemented, then a small number of posters could not abuse the TD function to effectively censor anyone.

The yappers have been politely asked to refrain from spamming up threads to which they make no sensible contributions, and they have not voluntarily complied. This shows a lack of good taste and self-discipline.

The mechanism for enforcing good taste is forum moderation; setting a limit on the number of posts within a time period would, in addition, impose some discipline on those who cannot or will not discipline themselves.
