I think that the signed-in status of every player should always be shown. Reasons:
(1) there really is no good reason for keeping that information private;
(2) extended delays to drag on with a hopeless position seems to occur way too often (does anyone looking at 10 ready-to-win games that have 20 days left before the next move? What on earth are those people doing?)
(3) Sometimes I see that people are signing in and making moves in other games while my games with them are sitting stale, so I quickly and shamelessly take those time-out wins immediately when the skull appears (You should you see some of the protests that I've gotten about poor sportswomanship!!!)
(4) If everyone knew that their sign-in status was visible every time that they sign in, they might play less of a duck-the-obvious moves type of strategies and RHP would be better off!

1) You obviously haven't thought too hard about this...

What if my boss plays on RHP and sees me with a little green dot beside my name all day? 1 reason.

Do you realise the amount of times I got pms saying "move in our game" when I had the green dot up? Some games require longer to think about, so I might use the full time allowed. Not displaying the green dot pretty much stops those types of pms. 2 reasons.

Do you display to the rest of the world what your doing in other activities? Why should I have to broadcast to everybody that I'm playing chess all day? There are no good reasons for you not displaying a different avatar for the days that you are playing chess in only your panties and a t-shirt. Please do so.

If I were your boss, and I knew you are hanging around this place, I would regularly check up on your profile to see when you made your moves. And if they were not made during lunch breaks...

The green dot hardly helps you out in this case.

This is a bad idea. imo

In any case:
Some people would wait to be timed out rather than to be checkmated. [or resign]
They can then delude themselves that they could have won if they had been in time.

Broadcasting the fact that I am playing all day, and my boss doing some pseudo-spying on me are two different things.

1. Probably shouldn't be playing chess all day at work.
2. Ignore the pms.
3. I agree, there is no reason to broadcast to the world your online status. By individual choose seems to be fine.

Okay. I thought about it. We disagree for several reasons.

(1) Who in their right mind plays their boss in RHP with their real name and on work time? Please excuse me for thinking that is kind of weird, but your point is taken.

(2) I never got one of those types of messages, except one time just two days ago someone suggested that I might play faster and I explained that I was studying a difficult endgame and they thanked me for letting him know and he signed off.

(3) I'll have to pull my shade down. I didn't know you were watching me play. (Which colors was I wearing? Did you have a favorite? Oh, no. Sorry, this is INTERNET chess. We must have the concept confused somewhere.)

(4) Okay, I thought some more about it. I don't care that much. Keep your green dot to yourself. Why bother showing any color dots at all?

You win!

I like your name. It makes sense to me. It explained what is going on. I think you ARE TOTALLY right. From now on I will just watch those poor souls sitting on forced-mate-on-move and feel a touch of pitty and joy instead of wishing I could send a curse through the wires at them. You are very smart!!!

I have to think about this one. I'm trying to think of what the other thing is.

I am starting to get it. No one agrees with me. Bad idea, but thanks for weighing in.

P.S. I'm still right. I just wont push it any more. I'm through. Not another word. It's useless. People like having choices.

P.S.P.S. How about if we have an option to have a green dot show even when we aren't really signed in? You know, just to freak all those other impatient can't mind your own business types of creepers? Wouldn't that at least be cool?

P.S.P.S.P.S. I think that we should have torquoise dots.

What will knowing I'm online help you at all? Are you going to PM me and force me to move? Should the time limits be adjusted based on how much time you spend at RHP? What help will you knowing I'm online be? Time limit is time limit, some users drag games out (I don't know why, I resign) and knowing they are moving isn't going to help you any.
