That seems to me an entirely more likely event, than that of god's existence. A perfectly reasonable psychological function of Christianity could indeed be the process DC mentions, what makes you think it so poor? I was discussing the pschological processes behind belief systems with a Dr friend who works in an asylum and he believes it is quite obvious that the neural processes behind faith have the same root as those of several psychological syndromes.
