What are the "spiritual" ramifications of this?
As for the what came first question, there can be no doubt that chickens descended from another species of bird which laid eggs, so eggs definitely pre-date chickens.

Cats have been born with 2 heads and donkeys with 5 legs.
Its just a diversion from the norm - by the material energy being temporarily diverted from the blue print.
Why?
Just because it can............and it is not an accident.
There are no such thing as accidents.
We should be asking why not.
On some level karma is at work......... Thats for sure.

I am willing to bet you cannot quote the verse.
20 God said, 'Let the waters be alive with a swarm of living creatures, and let birds wing their way above the earth across the vault of heaven.' And so it was.
21 God created great sea-monsters and all the creatures that glide and teem in the waters in their own species, and winged birds in their own species. God saw that it was good.

But what is not mentioned is how they were created. God may have caused eggs to appear, from which all the birds emerged, thus the eggs can come first and TWhitehead still wins.
