But apart from that - aren't you meant to keep State separate from religion?

The State shouldn't be 'affirming' anything in religion. Any religion.

The Founding Fathers wanted to protect religion from the government, not the other way around.
I honestly don’t see anything in the Christian religion that is antithetical to good government but I haven’t given it a lot of thought. Maybe somebody can come up with a Christian teaching or value that would not be considered good in government practice.
But I’m not at all advocating for Christianity and government to mix. I wouldn’t want Christianity to be polluted by politicians.
