"These are murmurers, complainers, going on according to their own lusts; and their mouth speaks great swelling things, flattering persons for the sake of advantage." ~ Jude 16-19
I see this verse being wielded and aimed at people on this forum from time to time.
Might not the unilateral declaration "their mouth speaks great swelling things" just as easily be a way of describing the very people who are wielding and aiming it?
Thoughts?
@fmf saidThere is a lot things in Jude for a book that only has one chapter in it.

Here is a little more.
Jude
But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

You cherry picked a verse, taking it out of its context, and made an application of it that has nothing to do with what it's talking about.
You don't understand the meaning of one word of it. Try reading the entire letter and see if you can learn what and who the verse is talking about.
I've never seen that verse quoted in the SF before.
@josephw saidI am interested in the phrase mouths speaking great swelling things, a striking image, that's all. I will let believers debate the entirety of Jude. If the topic were the entire letter and/or what Jude meant by the phrase, then I would have probably put the name "Jude" in the thread title.
My thoughts?

@sonship said"There is no God"
The mother of all great swelling words are "There is no God" announced by atheists. What great swelling words of pride, of arrogance from fallen human beings could exceed these?
I, for one, do not make that assertion. But I wouldn't describe them as "'words of pride and arrogance" any more or any less than a lot of what theists say about themselves in the context of their worship of their God figures.
@FMF
I thought I did not bold that.
" There is no God"
Great swelling words are not restricted to unbelievers or believers.
But to get an idea of what Jude had in mind, I (if no one else) check the other things he wrote in that context -
" To execute judgment against all and to convict all the ungodly concerning all thier ungodly works which they have done in ungodliness, and concerning all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. These are murmurers, complainers, . . . etc. their mouth speaks great swelling things, . . . "
I get the impression of ungodly, ungodliness doings and words to indicate simply not expressing anything of God's influence on human living or against outright against Him or regarding Him.
Giving thanks to God is a remedy to keep the mouth from this kind of ugly speech.
Confession of our sins is also a deterrent.
Praise to the Lord and petition for all men also helps us to "taste" the ugliness of
innappropirate words of swelling pride. These are practical helps for some of us to stear away from speaking "great swelling things" in our murmuring, complaining, blasphemies. This kind of speaking stains our character.
Proverbs says "A gentle tongue is a tree of life" (Prov. 15:4)
And as to your probable next comment - No, I have not always displayed this "gentle tongue" here.
@sonship saidAs I said, I wouldn't describe "There is no God" as "'words of pride and arrogance" any more or less than a lot of what theists ~ like you ~ say about themselves in the context of their worship of their God figures. Sorry for the repetition; you sidestepped it.

@FMF
Okay.
I didn't name FMF in the post.
I pointed out that the affirmation of there being no God (classic atheism) is indeed great swelling words.
If you say that's not you, I accept that.
You say "God figure" instead as if God could only be one or more figments of someone's imagination - just an imaginary figure.
You are a special kind of atheist - not saying there is no God or gods, just saying all such reference is imaginary.
