In a recent World Bank study* it doesn't seem that being Catholic matters much for HIV prevalence rates and, when it does, it actually seems to decrease prevalence rates. This controlling for marital status, wealth, urban/rural residence and education.

I find it interesting that the Pope gets berated for his recommendations when people are clearly picking and choosing which ones to accept, which basically, to me, means that they do what they want regardless of the Pope.

I don't think the Pope is right to condemn the use of condoms. Quite the contrary. It's just that there seems to be a lot of hysteria going on whenever the Pope or the Vatican say something similar, which is clearly unwarranted.

There are other, more important, reasons at work here. Maybe that's where the focus should go. Ignore the Pope in his Ivory Tower.

I know what it was; I was just kidding. I know all about the Nazis because my pop fought them, and my mum was subjected to them. The fact IS, and nobody seems to realize this, is that almost ALL of Germany's youth were in the Hitler Youth. It was practically mandatory if one did not want to draw the suspicion of the Nazi party or Secret Police. It's not that different than the fact that most of Russia's youth were members of the Young Communists. Today, in Europe, they have the Young Leftists, Young Atheists, Young Anarchists, Young Soccer Hooligans, Young Socialists, Young Abortionists, Young Jew-Haters, Young Islamofascists...you get the picture. The Pope is right at home in Europe.

This truly appalling man is responsible for so much of the suffering in the world just like his predesessor was in his turn.
How is the Pope responsible for much of the suffering in the world? Did he send 19 Muslims to fly into the WTC? Does he supply insurgents in Iraq with materiel to make road-side bombs that kill not just Americans but Iraqis too? Does he supply al-qaeda with the funds to continue to wreak havok all over the civilized world? Is he responsible for Darfur? Is the pope just a "little" meaner than Osama bin Laden? I'll take the pope over bin-laden any day. 🙄

First of all, you really can't compare fascism in Nazi Germany to Communism, Leftism (fascism is a right-wing ideology), atheism, anarchism, football (I mean, football's awesome!), socialism (which is sort of the opposite of fascism), pro-choice-ism, and "Islamofascism," which really doesn't exist in any sort of organized way. You can compare fascism to anti-Semitism, as you did, for obvious reasons that I really don't think I have to go into.

Second of all, there were several youth in Germany who had the guts not to join Hitler Youth and died for it. They are heroes and should be remembered, as should other Nazi-fighters, including the Jews and Communists of the Warsaw ghetto.

Europe is generally not fascist right now. The pope very well may still be.

As would I. Bin Laden is not a Muslim; he is a self-proclaimed crusader that is actually the driving force behind the campaign to call anti-Zionist Muslims "Islamofascist." He does much, much more harm to his cause than good. The Pope is similar, in his own way. How can we be sure he still doesn't approve of fascist ideals?

Deaths due to terrorism are such a small proportion of world suffering that they are hardly worth mentioning. In Zambia a politician stole the money that should have been used for AIDS medicine and as a result probably more people died of AIDS than died on 9/11 due to terrorism.
If it is true that most catholics do not use condoms because of the Pope, then the Pope is probably responsible for more deaths than Osama. However I do not personally think that the Pope is solely responsible - though I do think he could do more to correct the situation.

So, you think the 3,000+ innocent people who died in New York are HARDLY WORTH MENTIONING????!!!! Do you know how stupid your statement makes you sound? I am totally Gob-smacked!!!

Coming from S. Afrikka, it doesn't surprise me. The people in NY never had a chance. The idiots in Zambia got AIDS how???? by screwing anything with a hole, right? They CHOSE, for the most part, to have unprotected sex....the victims of terrorism rarely know what hits them....you statement is patently stupid......you should be ashamed......pathetic....

Actually, what he said does not sound so stupid. He says that deaths due to terrorism (and since we're talking the 9/11 attack we'll go with that) constitute a small portion of world suffering.

Ok, let's put that into perspective. Less than 3,000 people died in NY on one day, and only the one day, due to terrorist attack. On the other hand, in the US alone, about 1,165 people die every day due to smoking related causes. Every day. Where's your outrage there?

AIDS in Africa alone, not worldwide, kills about 8,500 people every day. EVERY DAY. Not just one day. No, every day, over and over and over. 3.1 million per year.

"Deaths due to terrorism are such a small proportion of world suffering that they are hardly worth mentioning." True statement. The only one sounding stupid is you in that you seem to not have a grasp of statistical analysis. It is you in your shrill ignorance of the suffering of the African peoples who is pathetic, and should be ashamed.

The ignorant, however, are never ashamed and are always the experts. Just ask yourself.

Yes, yes, yes. But bashing the Pope is more fun, don't you know, almost as much fun as bashing the bishop.

Bishops always advance sideways and just at one colour; powerful, obsessed and dangerous at the same time😵
