The beginnings of the universe in Genesis 1:1 provide no details. The terse summary simply indicates creation was the work of Elohim [plural noun for God refers to all three coequal members of the trinity]. In Genesis 1:2 planet earth was restored to be inhabited by humanity. Neither science nor the bible provide precise data for determining the age of the earth.

There was no need to restore the earth to be inhabited for it first needs to be completed and prepared for habitation. Genesis 1:1 is just making the general statement about God creating the heavens and the earth. It makes no statement that they were complete in the beginning. Then from Genesis 1:2 it explains what was accomplished on each day of creation and how it was prepared to be inhabited.
