Originally posted by KellyJayYeah, we had some when I was a kid. My mom married this guy Bob Kelly, and we moved into his house. The house was on the small side but in my explorations, age 10 or so, I saw this room filled with 78 RPM records and some of them like you say, one sided and almost a quarter inch thick.
If I could show you the music collection one of my family members
inherited it would blow you a way. Some of records only had music on one
side, and the thickness was huge, these are some old records. π
Most of them were later 78's and had decent audio quality.
The problem was, there was no record player, but I was rummaging through the room and I found a box and pulled it out and inside was a record player platter with motor and such, tonearm and needle but no amplifier or speaker.
ATT I had recently traded a model airplane engine for a diode and a pair of old style earphones.
So I am looking at the tonearm and I see these wires coming off the cartridge, and I put two visuals together, my earphones which had wires sticking out of the end of the cord and the wires to the cartridge.
So I mentally put the two together and then followed through and connected the cartridge to the earphones directly, no electronics.
Lo and behold, it worked! I could hear the music being played and with a decent volume! So I spent hours in that room playing record after record and nobody cared what I was doing, it must have been Bob's dad that had the collection because his mom, who lived there with us, NEVER went in that room. So there I was, this 10 year old kid, listening to music of a number of genre's, from classic to musical comedy to light classic to pop music of the era.
That was quite an education into music for a little kid! I wish I had all those records now. Bob and mom got divorced and my uncle bought the place and he was pretty much non cultural so I am sure all those records went into the trash.
Such a waste. Literally thousands of albums.
