That was Paul's belief because he thought that the "end times" were going to come very soon, and being single would help people stay focused on being good Christians -- praying, doing good deeds and acts of charity and all that. The theory is that married people are spending their time working on their relationship, raising children, running the household, supporting the family, etc.
