Three thousands years ago, the leader of the community of the tribes in the biblical territories had problem with their people. They did things that they shouldn't. And so was the demons invented. And used.
"If you don't follow the rules of god [read: my rules] you will be possessed by demons. Remember the guy in the next village? [actually he was epileptic, but it was scary enough.] If you use bad language / doesn't respect your father and your mother / don't stop pick your nose / pray to Ba'al [pick an alternative] then the demons will take you!"
That's the story why there are so many demons in the bible. To scare you off bad things. You believe in demons, so it works. I don't believe in demons, so I don't sht my pants everything something unusual happens.
But I wouldn't convince you that you are wrong, as long you are happy with it, and it doesn't hurt anyone else.

My parents tried to use this method on me. Therefore I became a good boy. Later I found out that it wasn't more than lies, but at that age I could differ right from wrong so there was no need for any extranatural beings anymore.
