Matthew 10:34-39

34“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother, a daughterinlaw against her moth ...[text shortened]... 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

I find this to be one of the most interesting passages in the Bible.

I think you should move out, RB. It's time.

Get your strength from the Lord. I'll pray for your parents.

RB, that will be a wonderful combination. You get your strength from the Lord. Darfius will pray for your parents. And you will move out and be a man.

You really have no understanding of Christ, do you?
He doesn't say " It's ok to publicly criticize your parents": What he's saying is to follow him even if its against your parents wishes.
Nemesio is better able to explain the meaning of the metaphors than I am.

God is the ultimate love.....doesnt mean you love your parents or children less.....means there is no stronger love than.

I'm not sure that RBHILL really criticized his parents unfairly. If his mom doesn't
read the Bible (I don't think RBHILL is lying) because she think she doesn't have
to, but still calls herself a Christian, then she is prideful by Christian standards.

However, his dad's saying that there were 15 commandments is obviously a joke.
This is why I asked my questions of RBHILL (which, I notice, went unanswered;
I suspect that they did because RBHILL wanted to ask his pastor or consult online
Christian sites to see if saying yes to any of them constituted blasphemy).

As for explaining this passage, I, like Kirk, have found this passage very enigmatic.
I think that your understanding, Frogstomp, and RBHILL's is fairly concordant. I
don't think RBHILL was dishonoring them, but speaking what he understood to be
the truth about their understanding of Christianity. From his descriptions of his
mother, she is among the most misinformed Roman Catholics I know.

I want to know RB's definition of pride . It seems he wants to have it both ways . (Acusing others of pride when they point out his errors in spelling , but thinking it's ok for him to point out flaws in them .) Look up "double standard' while you're at it , RB . (I would also like to know his definition of judgement .)

It might be enigimatic , however using it as a excuse for disrepecting your parents is not Honoring them.

I did think you could explain the metaphor, but seeing you think my view of the passage is concordant with RBHILL's , I now realize, I thought wrong.

Contrary to Darfius's representation of me, I do not have all or even a substantial
subset of the answers.

I just know wrong when I see it (you know, A and ~A are simultaneously true...that
sort of stuff).

I'm still mystified about your use of "concordant".

RBHILL is obviously doing this and using this Scripture to support that
his actions are justified as not 'dishonorable.' He is following what he
feels is his vocation in spite of his parents. This I feel is at the essence
of the Scripture and, as such, the point of concordance between your and
his position.

Furthermore, I also believe that RBHILL not 'criticizing' his parents; it is not
as if he is saying his mom is fat or ugly. He's saying she is an inattentive
Christian, which by all accounts is true. Her version of Roman Catholicism
is theologically reprehensible and is at least partly responsible for RBHILL's
antagonistic behavior towards that tradition. That he believes his dad is
disrespectful is the product of his complete absence of a sense of humor
about religious topics.

Honoring one's parents does not preclude judging them against the standards
by which they claim to live. Indeed, I am sure that RBHILL feels very
justified in pronouncing these judgments, and (within the fundamentalist
Christian theological framework), I'm not sure he isn't justified.

His opinion of what his parent's beliefs are isn't the issue, It's his showing public disrespect for them.
That you have such a low opinion of his mothers religious beliefs ought to give you pause to reconsider what "Honor yoyr father and mother" means. In your eyes she has been dishonored.

I don't honestly believe that this is how a church defines a miracle is it? I thought raising from the dead was a miracle, not when someone is 'born again'. That's rather debasing the concept I would have thought.

It's like giving a Victoria Cross to an atheist for attending a happy-clappy Church meeting...
