1. We don't know that small changes are adding to large changes. What we do know is that the theory predicts that this will be the case, that the theory's predictions are currently supported by evidence, and that there are no other theories that work.
2. Better or worse in evolution is not an anthropomorphic better or worse - as in, I'm better than you, or you are better than me. Better means, can survive longer. Worse means, can't. Survival is better for the individual who manages to do it, since they can reproduce and have offspring. And the key to evolution is the inheritance of characteristics from one generation to the next.

There are, on average, 40 mutations every time the genome is replicated. Most of these do nothing. Most are deleterious. Some change a gene, buthave no effect on it's function.
How could 40 changes, some of which cause horrible genetic conditions be "keeping man as man"??

And by the way, I've survived pretty well without a belief in the 'One True God' for 38 years, and still going strong. There'd be some Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, many Christians, and a cornucopia of other religions who might beg to differ on your 'One True God', but hey, that's the beauty of our world. We're all just a little bit different.
