The danger is not in its nature although some have argued that its a game of war and could be considered unchristian but we are counselled not to be righteous over much. The danger lies in the time that it consumes to get better. It could if one is not careful lead to idolatry.
But how far does the "not part of the world" thing go? Isn't playing chess also indulging yourself in worldly rituals?
