excellent point. we would never have developed our huge brains without all the protein from eating meat. we would never have survived the ice age without killing for furs.

why did god make the little piggies taste soooooooooo nice?
But seriously, what Dasa is trying to get at, in a most awkward way is that we dont need to eat meat anymore to sustain our health. With our superior intelligence over land-based animals and our ability to farm food, etc. we can all be vegetarians and slaughter less animals. It really is just to satisfy the little inch strip of taste buds on our tounges and nothing more.

But now the world has changed (for humans). The industrial age and the rampant advancement of technology has given us more than we need.
It has given us the potential to live and not just survive.
With our superior intelligence we could make laws that ensure the that all people get fed, that flora and fauna are protected, that human rights are preserved in all countries, etc.
But, as usual, it only takes one bad egg, or say a couple of hi-jacked planes rammed into the twin towers to take us back into the bad old days. That one self-defining act has ensured the military budget for the U.S. stay intact. The trillions of dollars need justification at the end of the day.
But I digress. For me, I find it hard to look into a pigs eyes and then kill it for food - as would a lot of others. I guess that's why we have butchers and other people to do that for us.

During that time, it became like a pet to the children and there was emotional distress for the entire family when it came time to sacrifice it.

Just another example of the man made nature of religion.
