Is it true what they said on the Dan Patrick show? That Steinbrenners first move in the afterlife was to fire Billy Martin?

I can just see George at the Pearly gates trying to get in. Peter will say, "Not so much" and George will respond, "Your fired!!".

I wonder if baseball will return to some sort of normalcy now that George is gone. Will teams like the Yankees stop skyrocketing payrolls that other teams cannot keep up with?

Surely you are joking??? Why in the world would ANY team try and do something that BENEFITS their direct competition??
They all have the same goal....to win the top prize?
Secondly, your argument that small market teams not being able to compete seems to be a tad off with the standings at the All Star break.
Steinbrenner had a huge ego (surprise...many owners, players, coaches do).
He had an iron will to win and a win at any cost attitude.
But, he didn't win every year...did he?
George has been running the show first hand for the last two years due to health problems, his two sons have been.

I also live in northern Jersey (my whole life). So I guess that proves your theory wrong about there being no one in the NYC metro area who liked Steinbrenner. 😀

I enjoy playing online chess and posting in online forums. That's my excuse.

You evidently hate the whole idea of online forums and yet you choose to post in them. What's your excuse? I am truly sorry about your condition, but surely there are things you can do besides post in a forum you totally detest.

I've no respect for a man who would offer $$$ to anyone who would "dig up dirt" on Dave Winfield, one of the classiest players who ever put on a uniform.

I appreciated the man's sense of humor. He knew he was lampooned on Seinfeld and commented Seinfeld was accurately portraying him. Quite different from the thin skinned rest of them, including other sports. I think the man certainly deserves the covereage he's getting. May he RIP!

The small market verses big market dilemma is what I am referring to. All I can say is we will look at the end of the year the number of winning teams and losing teams and then determine which ones are big market verses small market teams. Then we will look at wins it all at the end of the day.

My guess is that there will be a handfull of small market teams who have winning seasons and a handfull of big market teams who have losing seasons, just to appease the (there is nothing to see here regarding a lack of parity in MLB) gods, while a big market team like the Yankees will win the big prize.

So just sit back and watch my prophetic predictions once again be proven correct. 😉

They are in a horrible division and are much better this year due to ptiching coming together and Rolan at third as their anchor. Having said that, can they win the division? Maybe, but after that look at teams like the Phillies and Dodgers and tell me that they have a snow balls chance of going anywhere.

I find it hard to believe that the Reds can continue the offensive pace they have set in the first half. If they are to compete their pitching must improve.

    It already has.

Tampa Bay two years ago and Florida winning two world championships have proven that a small market team can beat some of the big market teams in the playoffs. It's interesting that Philly is now considered a "big market"; ten years ago they were moribund.

As I have said repeatidly, at the end of the year you will have a hand full of small market teams have winning seasons and a hand full of big market teams who have losing seasons, but by in large you get what ya pay for. Of course, you don't always get what you pay for by on average you do. Its like anything else really.
