2007: Winner is an engine user.

Tournament is awarded to 2nd place finisher.

He turns out to be an engine user.

2008: Four finalists are removed from the finals because they are engine cheats.

The timing of their removal essentially decides who wins the tournament.

Granted, it ain't Hurricane Katrina but I would say these were as big of "disasters" as it is possible for a tournament run on an internet chess site to be.

It seems to me that all the 2008 have no games left. But no awardings to Gatechrasher yet. May come during the day...

I tell you, its a tradition. Who knows, maybe they are considering excluding all the games played by banned players. But I doubt it.

Possibly that's what the wait is. If that is the case I wouldn't be surprised if Russ was creating an automatic script so not just the 2008 Championship would be affected.

Of course I wonder if there would be complaints by a "dethroned" tournament winner if they lost due to accepting a draw that was not consequential to the tournament until the banned players games were excluded... Not that folks can find things to complain about or anything.

Strange how Gatecrasher has been awarded the 2008 Champion. No offense to Gatecrasher, but I will no longer be playing here or resubscribing. This site is just too unpredictable.

****Warning to all players in the 2009 Championships: Make sure you play as long as possible in order for them to ban any engines, otherwise you get penalized for drawing with and losing to them.**** At this site, the early bird doesn't get them worm! I don't have time to intentionally delay games, and so I have no time for this site.

It is neither strange nor unpredictable since this is how tournaments have been scored for years. But it is certainly unfair. I think the admins devised this system with the view that there might be an occasional banning and that this methodology would not have any impact other than to deny victory to a cheat. The four bannings in the final round of the 2008 championships has shown the huge flaw in the present system. It is an exceptional event that no-one foresaw until it happened. Rather than leave the site, add your support to have the system changed in the site ideas thread started by Swiss Gambit. Thread 107268
