It appears that the Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is considering a proposal that would establish him as the high priest of his own form of evangelical Christianity, convert his cabinet members into bishops of a lower rank, and submit church activities to the civil and military power of his government.

BUt where did all of his supporters on this site go? :'(

You see I think Chavez has it right. Just look to the state for all of your problems to be solved. The state will tell us how much we can make, will tell us that we can't own private property because it all belongs to the state, will tell us how much we will retire with, will eradicate all poverty, will tell you what is politically correct or not correct, and lastly will now tell us how we should worship. So lets all suckle up to the breast of the socialist nightmare of Latin America and let our pappy Hugo be the parent we never had.

Edit: I don't think Archebishop will be good enough for him. How about Pope? All hail Pope Chavez!!!

It's no wonder that Chavez hates the United States so much. All this freedom of choice and ownership of private property and evil capitalism and secularized government must make him physically ill.

Hugo Chavez is a dangerous political clown. He claims he wants to improve the fate of the poor people in his country, but in the end they will pay the price for his stupid actions.

Do you have any other "reliable" sources (😛) to back this claim up?

Also, he is a several times elected leader of his country- the majority of the venzuelan people must think that he's doing the right things.

Just to be clear here - is this nebulous proposal to make Chavez personally head of the church, or the President generally? If it's the latter, I don't think we need get too excited about Venezuela - they'd only be doing what Henry VIII did half a millennium ago.

Only his wife needs to get excited.

I would hardly call Fox News a reliable news source. Remember that this is the "news" channel that reported Mark Foley as a Democrat.

He's gay and hitting on children. He must be a Democrat.

Now to be fair, lets not be picking on Fox news. After all, CBS had mud on thier face with Dan Rather's blunders, no? I think any news agency should be suspect of error whether intentional or otherwise. Having said that, I can say I have heard from other news sources that Chavez is deeply religious and promotes the church in governmental programs. Can I tell you with 100% certainty that what I am hearing is factual? No, I cannot, however, it seems to be the case. All I hear from people is that this probably is not true. Assuming it is true, however, what do you think?
