For decades I've watched and listened to the pro life right wing propaganda machine, noses pointed in the air, clutching their little bibles with their fine air of moral superiority advocating that abortion is murder, and we must stop this inhuman practice. A closer look at this situation would suggest these folks are not as "pro life" as they appear. Once these babies inflate their lungs with the 1st breath of air, all that concern, bible thumping, political lobbying and financial support goes straight out the window. Where is all the concern from the pro life folks and their political lobbyists, when a 6 year old child is malnourished? Has inadequate educational opportunities? Dies in a school shooting? Dies of disease that could have been prevented with proper medical care? Is the victim of domestic abuse? Is gang raped or beaten in their early teen years? Answer: Absolutely none! (And of course we're not supposed to talk about all those wealthy pro life lawmakers and executives who've paid for abortions for their mistresses and girlfriends when they were informed that a little 9 month surprise was on the way!) The abortion issue attracts money and votes, and is a convenient political tool for these folks, nothing more. These folks twist the words of pro choice advocates, calling them "pro abortion" this is absolute nonsense, no woman happily looks forward to having an abortion. If the so called pro life folks demonstrated even 1% of their concern and support for these kids in the first 18 years of their lives as they did in the 9 months before birth, I might be more supportive of them, as it is, I see them for what they really are: Just another set of right wing hypocrites who can't seem to practice what they preach.

Why, in America, does abortion seem to be a left v right issue with the right being anti and the left being pro choice?

I am pretty sure I the UK opinion is not nearly as partisan.

    This is silly posturing.

Countless churches are involved in outreach to poor and developing nations. The Catholic church is feeding countless people and providing education to millions in undeveloped nations.

I too have the same questions/confusion. Perhaps it has to do with the brand of Puritanism and belief in meritocracy prevalent in the U.S. You reap what you sow. Once born, a child is the parent's burden, not society's. There is a belief, often expressed on this site, that the U.S. abounds in economic opportunities for individuals if they are hard working. The statistics show that upward mobility in the U.S. is far more difficult than in most other industrialized Western countries. On the surface, the pro lifers seem contradictory, but given their belief system, it makes sense. Due to the complex and contradictory nature of the Bible, both liberals and conservatives can find justification for their actions. Liberals tend to put a great deal of weight on compassion and kindness. Conservatives do to a limited extent but value loyalty, independence, authority and their tribe far more than liberals. Europe's more secure safety net may also be a product of two devastating World Wars, one after the other. All sectors of society were hit hard. Perhaps this brought a realization that strong social safety nets were essential for their national security and economic growth. "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion", by Jonathan Haidt, is an interesting read.

The so called liberals can never stake a claim on compassion and kindness, because the only time these can be observed is when they are freely offered.

Exactly. Therefore the right never offers. You have the wrong end of the stick, here.

The Catholic church also bans contraception because they want lots more Catholics.

They're not doing their people any favors in this regard.

Every child should be a wanted child. No child asks to be born. The least that thinking adults can do is to ensure that any child which is born has a real chance of a good life.

The thing that really aggravates me is the pro-lifers' emphasis on end-of-term abortions, almost all of which are medically necessary and unavoidable. Their nonsense causes enormous distress to the almost-mothers who have been forced to abort. The vast majority of abortions are in the first trimester when the future baby is still a mass of undifferentiated cells.

Children face a gauntlet, that much is true.

They face and ever increasing secular society.

    1. A society that will either use birth control or abortion to curb their numbers.

    2. They will be introduced into a society that has rejected the traditional family in favor of either single parent homes or one without a mother and father for a variation of role models that often is without one of the two sexes. And since the Left no longer recognizes the two sexes they obviously reject the unique attributes that both sexes provide a child.

    3. They are born into a world with exponentially increasing debt. This will mean that by the time they are an adult their life choices will be severely impeded in terms of economic freedom. In effect, their future will have been stolen from them.

    4. They will wake to a public school system where children rank about 48th in the world in science and math, even though the US spends more on education than pretty much any other country in the world. Then they will be faced with being educated in an amoral environment where right and wrong are never addressed, other than to say that it is wrong to have a gun or think wanting to change your sex is abnormal.

I reckon all those of faith can do is what they are doing already. Just continue to have outreaches for unwed mothers and give to those in need. In fact, those who are religious give far more money and time to those in need than those who are secular like yourself.

No, people like you just sit around bad mouthing others for things that are not even true. You just spend all your time and money to elect people who promise to FORCE YOU to give more of your money in taxes that you hope will go to those in need when in reality only about 9 cents on the dollar actually does.

    Lazy arse.

    Excuses.

I am frankly far more than tired of these excuses from the right.

One might suppose that Christians would be more likely to see to the needs of their neighbors. But the dividing line is almost always money. Those with more never want to unclench it long enough to help out their lesser well-off neighbors.

This is so obvious that one might be excused from thinking that this should be the standard.

Yep, A USA secular society is what is written in the Constitution of the USA; written by our founding fathers whom were mostly Christian. So what's your point? Keep your religion to yourself and out of our government and you will have no problems unless you harm others. So whats your problem with this part of our Constitution?

A society that will either use birth control or abortion to curb their numbers.
This must be why the population of the world and the USA has more than doubled over the last 50 years. All your other BS in nothing but BS. Take it to someone who will listen to your lies whoedy boy; we only get a good laugh from your worthless posts.

Well justifying killing them in the womb has now moved to after birth too, should we find poor homes next, and kill of those that are unproductive members of society?

You watched a pro life propaganda, I'm impressed. You think others have a moral superiority view of themselves, look in the mirror!

You would destroy life in the womb because those responsible for that life cannot deal with it? Thats your solution for everyone and everything, kill them all? Where is the concern for those in need, where is yours? All the social ills of the planet are solved by killing the next generation? If we kill them in the womb at least they don't die by school shootings, grow up with poor medical care, or suffer inadequate educational opportunities, where in the world did you learn compassion? Just rip the unborn bodies a part a piece at time, puncher the head and suck out the brains, that will stop school shootings, it will slow down inadequate educational opportunities, put acid in their bodies so they burn from the inside out, after all we cannot hear them scream!
