He won both his elections handily. I'm guessing because Republicans were afraid of being outed as racist.
Plus, when the handwriting is on the wall, Republicans will vote for the furthest right candidate. If Republicans vote for ANY Democrat, it would be the most centrist one. This is really the only reason for pursuing centrism. In reality, it makes no one happy.
