49.8% of the vote is not a majority. It is a plurality of those who voted, and a MINORITY of Americans. Not all Americans voted. Trump was elected by a MINORITY of Americans. More did not vote for him than those who did.

And primaries mean nothing. Those in office are assumed to be able to defend their office.
