We were right to protect people. It's always right to stand up for others who can't stand up for themselves. But I don't think it's right to just get involved because we can (I'm thinking of the Vietnam war- which wasn't the UK anyway). Do you?

War is a waste of life.
Life is the most precious thing on our planet. To waste it is foolish. Every human has a value. An equal value.
That's why we should protect people who can't protect themselves.
And obviously, we should protect ourselves.
The question, I think you're asking, is when does protection digress into violation. That's a tricky question.
That's unfortunately not well managed by people in power.
For example, as you said, in the GF- the leader of one side dying isn't necessarily the end of a war. And this is because the other side are in the swing of things, people want revenge. Every time Benjamin talks about the war he brings up those hurting because of the war so far. He must know they'll never get their revenge, but he also knows that speaks to everyone who has wanted revenge.
We need to evolve past that way of thinking.
We need to forgive. Not forget, not be naïve, but knowledgeable and careful. And we need to appreciate each other. Both sides have dehumanised the other, exactly how Hitler managed the Holocaust.
