The fact that the government of Cuba confiscated private property is a complete crock? What fairy tale exactly are you living in? I agree with you that US corporations were exploiting the place before Fidel took over. No doubt about. But I think you kidding yourself if you think Castro is some kind of selfless hero that hasn't benefited personally from the ...[text shortened]... ks like you and me (well like me - don't know about you) that were forced to flee the country.
No one was ever forced to flee Cuba.
Originally posted by no1marauderI can't provide evidence that would stand up in a court of law but this is not a court of law so I rely on common sense, some logic, and admittedly its my own opinion. Castro is (or was) Cuba's dictator in control of the government. The government confiscated private property ergo Castro benefited.

As far as nobody (not one single person) ever being forced to flee Cuba .... you cannot be serious. You yourself even admitted earlier in the thread that he's not exactly a model for the advancement of human rights. I don't think its a stretch of the imagination to think that out of all the people that left Cuba some of them could be considered escapee's fleeing for their life.
Now I'm not taking the position that some would that Castro is the purely evil dictator that some people make him out to be but I do think that the hero worship/deny all criticism that's going on in this thread for Castro is getting a little carried away.

Fidel Castro, one of the truly remarkable men of the 20th Century, is set to undergo surgery for some gastrointestinial problems. I'm sure the whole RHP community joins me in wishing him a speedy recovery.😀
Fidel starting from a jungle base with only seven survivors from his landing back in Cuba after being exiled overthrew the corrupt and brut ...[text shortened]... pered rich dimwit who unfortunately is our figurehead.
So get well soon, Fidel!

You know the people of Cuba love Fidel; get over it. And stop using all CAPS.
"GOOD INTELLEGENCE" Youza; you didn't get educated in Cuba, did you? I thought Fidel had established a pretty good educational system.

You do know that even after 40 years of crippling embargos that Cuba has a better and more comprehensive health system than the US, don't you?
hey chancre ... you claim fidel did some bad stuff ... did he do anything good?
you seem to have seen bad stuff second hand (i am not being silly here, most people's claims like this are 45456th hand, i respect that there were bad consequences for some people and you saw that) .... have you ever seen anything fidel did good?
i saw something on tv about medical falicities in cuba ... even for the poor ... i am wondering how you see this, do you know anything about medical care in cuba (you are a medico i believe ... "chancre"?

The ramblings of a semi-literate making claims about Cuba aren't serious evidence of the situation in Cuba. Anybody can claim anything on the web; his accounts don't pass the believability factor to me - too many absurd claims. And you apparently don't know what the word "disingenous" means.

That being said I don't have an entirely negative viewpoint of Castro. On a scale of ruthless dictators I'd rate him well below the likes of Saddam Hussein for instance. I'm sure he's done some positive things for Cuba. Advancing freedom just hasn't been one of them in my opinion. But I do criticize the United States foreign policy towards Cuba. Allowing Cuba to become an ally of the Soviet Union was largely our fault and due to our extreme policy towards Cuba that in my opinion was unnecessary and stupid and remains so today.

Quick rule of thumb: When the people of a country are not allowed to leave and risk their lives and imprisonment to get out, that's not a sign that the ruler is a nice guy.
Anybody who wishes Castro well after his enslavement of the Cuban people is an ass.
The Cuban people were enslaved before Castro that's why they joined the Revolution and threw out the dictator Batista. Castro then freed the people from the shackles that foreigners had placed on their economy. As I said, Castro's human rights record isn't perfect, but to suggest he's akin to Hitler and/or Stalin is ridiculous. And all evidence is that the people in Cuba, most of whom were born since the Revolution, luvvvvvvvvv the guy.

Amnesty International says that there are 71 "prisoners of conscience" in Cuba in its 2006 report. Assuming they all are POC's, that's 71 too many but it hardly shows that Cuba is a brutal, Stalinist dictatorship. And people here are ignoring the great progress made in health care and literacy to the immense benefit of the average person in Cuba despite the economic and political pressure the US has placed on the country since the 1959. Fidel in the main has done a good job for his people no matter what the people in Miami think (the ones who thought that a child should be separated from his father for political reasons in the Elian Gonzalez case).
