@teinosuke saidExactly the same can be said of the history of homosexuality in Europe. The idea of binary-opposed genders defined by sex organs, with one sexual orientation allowed and all others banned or shunned, is of very recent origin.
Is it reasonable to say that China "started from a very conservative base"? As I understand, homosexuality was relatively widely accepted in pre-modern China, until legal sanctions were imposed under the Qing dynasty. I've read that there were also a number of pre-modern works of Chinese literature focusing on same-sex love. Could it not therefore be said that China ...[text shortened]... tised (and briefly made illegal) in the late nineteenth century (during a period of Westernisation).
Just google "history of homosexuality in Europe" -- there is a mass of scholarly research on the topic.
One example from dozens:

This is a generally ethnocentric forum dominated by white Americans and white Brits,
many of whom seem very fragile about criticisms of the USA or UK respectively, “
Whereas you take any critique of China and / or Easterners in your objective stride.
If I were to go to a predominantly African website and constantly use the phrase ‘black racist’ how do you suppose I’d be received?
Let’s just evaluate a societies pros and cons honestly and without favour and certainly without regard to skin colour or general phenotype.
Given that China is in course to become the joint or dominant super power it’s surely legitimate to discuss its prevailing attitudes regarding race, sexuality, gender and human rights / freedoms.
The post that was quoted here has been removedSo that's a no then? Nobody (apart from you) has described Romania as a 'typical eastern European country.' You just created a strawman you could immediately attack with your 'whatever that means.'
Well you should know what it means. It came from your head.
@ghost-of-a-duke saidOoooo, typical countries. Great tangent.

Hey, what about a typical Western European country. Let's see now, hmmm, I nominate Belgium. They have waffles, don't they? Typical.
A typical Mediterranean country? Malta. Like the sound of it. And they made a great film noir novel and a Bogart movie out of it.
What about a typical African country? Now we're talkin'. I nominate Morocco. But only if you can find it on a map.
A typical Asian country. Siam. No, wait, they don't call it that anymore. Howbout Burma. No, wait, they don't call it that anymore either. Indonesia. OK -> Indonesia. Do they still call it Indonesia?
