Tell us this about living wage. Mott's example above, a divorced mother of 3. What is a living wage for her and the 3 children.
Now, having answered that, tell us what a similar person, no children, no responsibilities, same job, same age, same hair color.........tell us if she should make the same wage that the mother of 3 makes. Hint....they don't both need the same amount to live on.

You will not answer this question.
Could y'all get a room? You are gumming up this thread, we need to leave room for Shallow Blue to respond to this post, which I fear will never happen.
New Issue: Why.......why....will no liberal answer this really really easy question?

how do you know that?
I know a lot of servers.

for those that (tip) with your card…how much does the waiter/ress get?
To be fair, I did read that businesses are allowed to deduct credit card fees from tips.

I'll ask my server from now on if their business does this and either adjust my tip upward or use cash (though I don't usually carry much cash).

Use cash while you can, hopefully the tips are only partly reported to the irs, the end of cash is on the horizon and all the card drones are bringing it on faster.

1/ Make it easy to use the card.
2/ Make it hard to use cash. This is happening in NZ with fewer and fewer ATMs and you need to notify the bank before withdrawing above $x, some businesses now not accepting cash. Vending machines not accepting cash, bus trips not taking cash
3/ Turn those that continue to use cash into pariahs and potential criminals.
4/ Total surveillance and control.

It's going to happen, we wont stop it, but we can resist for a while.

facts are, you pay a surcharge and have no idea where the money goes when paying with a card.

These owners have figured a way to screw their workers if they want to. Basically it is eliminating gratuity tips.

Or just much more convenient and logical. Cash is only a representation of whatever value the system places on it. We have no real control, we never have and probably never will. I only have to get cash if I want a product or service from a Luddite or voluntarily in order to pay a busker or help a forgotten soul on the street but what a waste of matériels time and energy cash actually is if you think about it.

“We have no real control, we never have and probably never will. ”

Absurd, you do have control.

You are headed toward that and like a sheep being lead to slaughter, you love it.

I think that we who are being pressured about living wage, should at least know what a living wage is, and if it would apply in the case of two waitresses, one with more financial obligations than the other.

No you have no control precisely because you’re gullible enough to think you do.
Handling cash costs the banks a shed load of money so they will curtail and eventually phase out its use and the retail sector will fall in with it, you can already get through the self service tills quicker if you are using a card.
It will become a niche experience like driving a car with a combustion engine by the second half of the century, the sooner you relax and enjoy your ride on the conveyor belt the better.

That's ridiculous; do you seriously think servers don't get any of credit card tips?

never said that (eye roll) I say paying by card gives the owner 100% control of where the tips go.

No, it doesn't; they still have to forward the tips to the employees by the next payroll period.

Cash tips make it easier not to pay taxes on that income

Well, I go more to bars that serve food than restaurants per se but that's not how it works in those establishments in my neck of the woods.

I almost always pay with a card; the server hands you the bill which then has a blank spot for the tip. I do know some people who usually pay cash and they tend to hand over an amount and tell the server to keep the change. ...[text shortened]... cheap in my circle not to tip at least 20%; I almost always do 25% and round up to the next dollar.
IME, that's the way it was a few years ago. Now, they hand you a tablet and it says the amount and you can choose from a few suggested tip amounts (maybe 15%, 20% and 25% ) or tap "other" and put in your own amount. I guess you can still pay cash, but I never do, if for no other reason than I want the miles/points.

Even if some people still do pay cash, I don't see tipping as much of a tax avoidance mechanism nowadays.
