(b) Your habit of failing to give other people's views your full and honest scrutiny may amuse you but is a failing nonetheless.

(c) ...[text shortened]... e cases of late-term abortion that are more acceptable than others because of the circumstances.
I have stated this many times: I consider the moment of conception the moment a human comes into being, possessing all the basic Human Rights held by all the other members of the human family, in particular the Right to Life. Therefore performing an abortion on an unborn child, killing the unborn child, is an infringement on its basic rights and therefore morally unacceptable.

The basis of this statement is the assumption of the alleged separation between body and "who I am".
Why do you believe it is not separate?

Yes, you keep stating your position, but you keep failing to
say WHY.

LOL! More dodging!

I believe that the body is a shell and has no meaning apart
from the mind.

Well, I'm taking a wild stab in the dark here, but don't Ivanhoe's views directly reflect the views of the Roman Hierophant?

Actually, he has stated (but never demonstrated) that his points of
view stem from reason and do not require religion to support them.

I've been begging him since one of my first posts to demonstrate
this.

He has refused in a variety of ways including:

1) Claiming he stated somewhere previously in a thread;
2) Claiming that the person asking the question is doing so insincerely;
and, most recently,
3) Posing the same question back at the asker, and trying to
distract the reader from his non-answering.

What is the right to life? Is it something held by all human beings? How do you define a human being? Is it different to a person?

Does the value of a human being have something to do with an eternal soul?

If you are asking why I think this is permissible, the answer is simply this: the permissibility of abortion is an entailment of what I take to be the most plausible ethical theory. I reached this conclusion by thinking a lot about theoretical ethics. You may think ...[text shortened]... ou have a good argument for this claim, present it. What is the first premise of this argument?
As you know, in science if you belief something you have to prove it. I am saying I do not know if morals exist. If you claim they do then prove it to me.
This is very important because if morals do not exist then your decission is based on a misunderstanding or even a lie.

As i have also pointed out in the abortion thread, this issue needs to be looked at in context. There is no clear cut answer to the abortion debate. we may not ever know scientifically when consciousness begins and we're actually killing a person but a four cell blastocyst with less innate intelligence than an amoeba is unlikely to fit the definition. Conv ...[text shortened]... viable alternative (perhaps enforced sterilization) all this blather about morality is pointless
I think "all this blather about morality" is very important because thats what those in favout of abortion base their ideas on.

This is the content of this thread's first post.

Canadaguy: "I'm interested in knowing what you left wingers actually believe in. All my life all I've ever heard is snide comments and conservative bashing from you guys. Never have I heard what you actually want from this world and what you believe to be true and right. Here is your chance to sell me on your beliefs."

This makes this thread's subject more than clear.
