Obama says Iran is at least 1 year from having the capability to build a nuclear weapon. That is good enough for me. Sometimes people exaggerate how powerful their nation is. They have done no nuclear tests that we have heard of.

If they're only a year or so away from being able to start production, then on what basis do you claim they aren't trying to build one?

Also, I'm growing a beard waiting for that link to Obama saying Iran isn't trying to build a nuclear bomb.

Metalbrain seems to equate "developing a nuclear bomb" with actually having all of the necessary components to assemble one.

It took the United States about four years to "invent nuclear weapons" from scratch. How much time does a nation with educated physicists and chemists to reinvent this wheel?

I think it is the uranium enrichment that takes a long time. Once you have weapons grade uranium it doesn't take that long.

The omission that strikes me is China is very dangerous and nk although trouble is tiny by comparison - I don't have any strong opinions against China as a nation - they have confucius - But in Europe a totallitarian country of that size has always caused trouble (its a credit they don't invade they neighbours but they are more than capable)

I believe 'treat people as you wish to be treated' there's hope to sort this out - but ignoring Chinas rising ambitions is dangerous.

The DPRK obviously does not like these drills taking place so close to their country. They probably feel these drills could turn into an invasion without much warning. Seems understandable to me.

W ...[text shortened]... rth Korea. Why not do this? Isn't it worth avoiding the risk of war or is war what Obama wants?

The US participates in training exercises.

North Korea participates in training exercises. And has detonated nukes. And has actually attacked South Koreans on a number of occasions. And has made verbal threats. And actually engaged in a full-scale invasion of South Korea at one point.

You are about the only one who feels sorry for North Korea. Hell, even China is starting to turn against them.

This is an excerpt from the link below:

The United States says such displays of military strength during the drills were aimed at reassuring it allies in the region, not antagonizing the regime in Pyongyang.

Why is doing military exercises right next to the border between the north and the south necessary to reassure allies in the region? Explain this if you believe it.

North Korea does some of it's military exercises at the North Korean/China border. Can you show that is does some near the border between north and south Korea?

Full scale invasion? Since when? What is your source of information?

Point being that you can go to the internet and find means of enriching uranium. It isn't secret. The materials to make it in large quantities, centrifuges and so forth, take time. But it isn't a decade long project for a nation with reasonably educated people.

Both the US and North Korea have the bulk of their forces massed along the DMZ. It's absolutely ludicrous you want proof that the North Korean army actually trains, or that all of their forces relocate every time they want to do a training exercise. Any infantry battalion worth a dam is constantly going in and out of training rotations.

Here's from you link.

"(CNN) -- North Korea on Thursday set out demanding conditions for any talks with Washington and Seoul, calling for the withdrawal of U.N. sanctions against it and a permanent end to joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises."

An END to training exercises. Not that they be moved, that they END.

As for the full scale invasion..

"It's absolutely ludicrous you want proof that the North Korean army actually trains"

I already acknowledged that NK trains. There you go distorting things in a feeble attempt to mislead. Whenever somebody's position is weak that is what they do. No surprise. We both know where they train is the issue. Stop this nonsense.

The article says "joint US-South Korean military exercises". Have you ever considered that NK doesn't have a problem with South Korean military exercises but does have a problem with the USA (most powerful military in the world) being there doing military drills with them?

Ever since the USA conquered the Japanese Empire the Japanese colonies became USA colonies along with Japan. The USA doing military exercises along with it's colonies just confirms that South Korea and Japan are imperialist puppets of the USA and regards them as great threats to the DPRK's security.

A full scale invasion back when the Korean War started? Who cares? The DPRK was fighting to liberate Korea from imperialists. That is how NK sees it. You may want to believe something different because you are hopelessly patriotic, but you seem disconnected from the reality of world history. The USA took colonies from Spain during the Spanish/American War and made them their own. The USA has been an imperialist nation ever since.

When the Japanese Empire bombed Pearl Harbor and invaded the USA's colony (formerly Spain's colony) and occupied it the USA wanted it back and then some.

Take a reality pill, dude. The USA isn't some good guy nation spreading benevolence throughout the world. The USA is an Empire, or more accurately, part of the British Empire. I know you accept that the British Empire does not exist because that is what you are supposed to believe, but ask yourself why the British burned the White House and now we are tight allies.
