In the UK women can too.

But occasionally a shop owner or fellow diner in a cafe will object.

I like belgianfreak's point about urinating being natural too.
However, common sense (remember that?) tells us the difference.
I think it is illegal, in Scotland at least, for someone (such as a shopowner) to prevent someone from breastfeeding in their premises.

of course covering up respectfully is the answer, but that would lead to no discussion; thus we have avoided that answer.

why should someone have to go to that hassle, carrying all that gear and increasing the chance of the milk getting infected, just becasue you object to seeing a body part designed for that very purpose? I find gross bellies and bum cracks on men more offensive to look at, and there's no need to let these out.
I dont really think that it is the person passing that makes the big deal, its the woman breast feeding. If women decides to get there tits out to feed there baby then expect people to look and not pass judgement on them for being a perv etc.

If a streaker was on a football field that you wouldnt look???

If the woman is comfortable having people looking at her then I see no problem.

At the end of the day, it is both benefits the babies health and the health of red blooded young men!! LOL! 😉😛

got to love those Scotish laws! Other examples I agree with are:

it's illegal to punish a child by withholding food
there's no such thing as trespass (but there is breaking and entering!)

I'm sure there are others, but it's too hot to think straight. The above might sound like they'd cause problems but they don't - they actually make things better 🙂

Do you object to or approve of breastfeeding in public? Why do you feel the way you do? (Even as I write these words, I know where this is headed.)
A related issue: At what age, if any, should it be forbidden for someone to suckle a breast in public?

I think it's obvious that if a woman gets her breasts out to feed that she's comfortable with people seeing. If she's not 100% OK then she may cover up with a towel, but that's her choice. However, I don't agree that breast feeding gives men a licence to oggle - a woman is entitled to wear a skirt/low cut top without giving you permission to strain to look up/down it. Likewise, a woman who's breastfeeding must acknowledge that people might see her boobs, but shouldn't have to have people blanantly getting their kicks from watching her do so.

[edit] nb. to address the point - streaker ar naked because they want to be seen naked. Breastfeeders only want to feed their baby - the fact they have to get their boobs out to do so is not the main objective.

Its a really dumb issue, breast feeding has been going on since the dawn of mammals and its only in recent history has it been considered a display of vulgarity. Its the public who is at fault here not the woman feeding her infant. In reality though, it only makes sense to follow local custom and if the locals are really anal about it, start an educational campaign to change the customs or taboo's of the area.
What in the heck is more natural than a mother breastfeeding her baby? BTW, in the US I see things have loosened up a bit, at least women are not afraid to breast feed in public but they cover up with a towel. I give them the dignity of not staring.

In many states in the US, it is legal for a women to breast feed in any place that she would otherwise be allowed to be in, such as a resteraunt or park. It would not be legal to make her stop and she is not required by law to cover up.

But I've rarely seen it done without the woman covering up. I think the awkwardness goes both ways.

If a co-worker of mine started breastfeeding without cover, I would personally find it a little awkward. Like how hard am I suppose to strive to not look, and am I sending the right vibes so as to appear like I come across this all the time (even though I almost never do)? It is only natural to look closely at something you rarely see that is in violation of a social norm. In this case we are have to fight that tendancy. But none of this means I am against it or wouldn't expect to get over the awkwardness shortly.

Likewise, women may not feel comfortable being seen, legal or not.

Perhaps if enough women started doing it without covering up, all of us would get used to it and no one would have a problem.

i don't understand your point. A lot of things have been going on since the dawn of mammals, that does not mean we do them in public. Regardless, public b.f. doesn't bother me.

My point is its men who are uptight about it. A few thousand years ago there would have been no such debate, just let the little one feed, no problem. Now everyone is so uptight they can't stand even a tiny view of a breast, especially one in a non-sexual mode, its ok on a model but not on a breast feeder. The public reaction is the problem, not the women feeding. Look at how they treat women in extreme muslim countries, they aren't even allowed to show skin or hair. Do you think thats the women's fault? I think the men in those communities are funtionally insane.

Why not, everyone else has the right to eat in public so why not kids as well.
