Tell me what do you do if there is a real emergency, your house is flattened by a tornado or hurricane, no power, no water, no food, you gonna feel independent THEN? Like the folks in North Carolina and such, lost everything, but I bet they are SO independent, they pick up the pieces, rebuild their house in a couple of days, resurrect the solar cells they used to have on the roof, get the well water going but they had to run 50 feet of pipe to get the well going again, so they are up and running, water, power, windows temporarily boarded up but by god they are independent.

The problem with most DEI initiatives is that they have not worked. Millions poured into salary and time spent trying to make faculty more diverse at Columbia and there was no change.
Meanwhile they could have just used the money to hire diverse faculty.
