The post that was quoted here has been removedCoen is not regarded as a hero in the Netherlands.
His statue in Hoorn even has a plaque stating that his behaviour was dubious and that the man is controversial, especially because of his crimes on Banda.
His final writing (wanting more money to oppress the natives and fight the English) started with the words: “Don’t despair”.
And this has become famous in certain circles in the Netherlands (protestants, for example) and was one of the slogans used to boost morality during WW2: so completely out of context of the man himself.
The man’s economic “successes” in the OIC are, within capitalist Netherlands, accepted as inspiring.
But, you ask any average Dutch person what they think of Coen and their answer will be: “Who?”
The post that was quoted here has been removedLook, darling, nobody is denying Europe’s history, it’s attrocious behaviour or its disregard for human life, dignity and humanity in general.
What people don’t accept is:
- the current generation is responsible for what previous generations did.
- that it was anti-black or Asian... most European countries have long histories of abusing white people just as bad.
- this whole malarkey of blaming white people for everything.
Nobody is suggesting there aren’t white people who are racist or are complete bastards.
But, what people are saying to you is that generalizing all white people, most white people, white men, Europeans, etc. is just as bad as any other form of racism.
Now grow a pair. Man up. And be a strong woman.
@shavixmir saidYEAH the Spanish weren't racist they abused the Dutch too
