@ghost-of-a-duke saidThere is no doubt that the connotations in using the word "boy" in the US have changed over the years.
Boy and 'lad' (which is the term I used) are synonyms.
Happy to educate.
It was amusing though how you changed lad to laddish to appear a little less ridiculous.
Back in the day, "boy" was not a term you would ever use because it was used on African Americans,
mainly in the south, to talk DOWN on them. I add this into the mix because I am sure most in here are unaware.
PS: Older-than-me Old Joe Biden is surely aware. Maxine Waters must be choking on it

The post that was quoted here has been removedI agree Biden's use of boy was not intentionally racist, and also that (due to its connotations) it wasn't the best use of language by the President. Even with race off the table, 'boy' can be used in a derogatory manner, to insinuate, for example, that the person you're saying it to is less of a man.
I learned that as a lad.
The post that was quoted here has been removedNein, würde es nicht.
@earl-of-trumps saidUnlike Boris Johnson, Matsuyama is still a young man at 29.
Let's put this into a proper perspective...
If Biden was to announce that he is meeting with Boris Johnson, would Biden refer to him as "that boy"?
It is purposely derogatory.
I don't think any variation of 'your boy done good' is derogatory, especially when used to congratulate as Biden did. Politics aside, I don't think you do either.
