In the American example I used 'boy,' but in the English version, it was colloquially more amusing (and simultaneously illuminative) to use lad or young lad. It demonstrated that the use by the president was in no way racist but merely a colloquial expression while congratulating an athlete, in no way demeaning him as a human being. But sure, English boy is fine.
