Regime change means changing a government; it does not mean killing the country’s population. If Iran says it wants regime change in Israel, I would not automatically interpret that as a declaration to kill every Israeli. But if an Iranian government repeatedly supports armed groups that kill Americans, that’s not merely rhetoric….itis conduct. They are dammit doing it.

My point is that hostility toward the United States has sometimes gone beyond words and resulted in Americans being attacked and held hostage. In 1979, Iranian militants seized the U.S. Embassy and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. So saying ‘“they only hate the government, not you or me’ doesn’t answer the question of whether the Iranian regime and organizations acting in its name ((proxies) have treated Americans as enemies.
I’m not going to defend the coup,. You can believe it was wrong if you want to. But you can still acknowledge that what happened afterwards, including taking the hostages, was wrong. One does not erase the other.
