@wildgrass saidBecause we live in a plutocracy and an oligarchy. Both parties are controlled by the wealthy and serve the wealthy. Neither will raise taxes on the rich. Both are controlled by the rich.
Warren Buffett once noted that he pays less in taxes than his own secretary, whic is morally wrong. Here's how it should work:
[quote]Let the engine of capitalism roar and then have the winners compensate the losers. By taking care of those who lose out in the free-market melee, the winners ensure the losers won’t want to destroy the system. What’s more, taxing the wealthy ...[text shortened]... mand almost all the power of influence but they still only get one vote.
RAISE TAXES ON THE RICH!
You have been divided and conquered. You only blame one party. That is what the rich want. They want republicans and democrats fighting each other instead of them. Both are ignoring their common enemy, the super wealthy. See how well it works?
@Metal-Brain saidIf one political party wants to increase taxes on the wealthy and the other political party wants to decrease taxes on the wealthy, then how can you say they are the same? They're literally the opposite on this particular issue.

@wildgrass saidIts hard for you to understand because you are in the minority. Very few Americans are that desperate and obsessed with the rich. Lazy people who think they are entitled to get live off others are not as common as you think. Americans are mostly happy with their life, so you wont get much support.

@AverageJoe1 saidThe so-called "Fair Tax" is nothing more than an increased sales tax, which is decidedly UNfair to the poor.
I agree that we should take care of the 50M people who are struggling, but I think there’s more to this conversation than simply saying the wealthy should pay more in taxes. What really matters is whether the system is fair, whether people have a genuine opportunity to succeed, and whether the money collected is actually being used wisely.
But I have a question for you: ...[text shortened]... ax would do that.. but wait, if we adopt that program, you will not be able to punish the Rich!!!!!!
@wildgrass saidSo, why then, are the constitutionalists in favor of lowering taxes on the rich?
The founding fathers of America also talked and wrote A LOT about the extreme dangers to government if the wealthy get to make all the decisions. They saw that play out with monarchical societies, and this was one of the key things they tried to prevent when setting up our government.
So, why then, are the constitutionalists in favor of lowering taxes on the rich?
Bc they aren't constitutionalists. They are 'constitutionalists' only when it favors the rich, not otherwise.
@Indonesia-Phil saidThis is essentially Trump's claim for not taxing the rich in America, that they will pull up stakes and take their wealth elsewhere. This is a lie, and he damn well knows it. The IRS taxes Americans wherever they live in the world. Moreover, even if an American living abroad abjures his citizenship, he STILL must file tax returns with the IRS and the IRS can still tax him for up to TEN years after abjuring U.S. citizenship, if the IRS has reason to believe that the person changed citizenship in order to avoid U.S. taxes. I know this from personal experience, having abjured my U.S. citizenship (more than ten yrs. ago).
In the UK the argument goes that if you tax the rich they up - sticks and move to another country, and pay no UK taxes at all, and this is indeed happening. In an 'advanced' capitalist society, wealth becomes a compound thing; the richer you are, the richer you will become, never more so than now. The disparity between rich and poor becomes greater. The UK now has a Pr ...[text shortened]... st, and the way things are going, he/she (however one may see the devil) could end up taking us all.
@moonbus saidThis is true.

Republicans have been spewing this "well, they'll just take their ball and go home" BS for decades, and they have yet to do it. They'd rather stay here where the politicians kowtow to them.
@Suzianne saidThere are about 50M destitute, who should not have to pay tax. But, your statement is quite curious, the immigrants that come here start off ‘poor’. But they use all the benefit of all that our country has to offer. Starting with welfare. It appears that you are saying they should not pay tax for that privilege.
The so-called "Fair Tax" is nothing more than an increased sales tax, which is decidedly UNfair to the poor.
To be Fair as you say, would be to be free from favoritism. You appear to favor one group over another, yet all being equal in citizenship.?
Taxing the rich is complex. Many, if not most or all, billionaires have no income and therefore pay no federal income tax. Their investments are difficult to tax because the money cannot actually be spent until they sell investments. Stocks swing throughout the day so it's difficult to tax stock investments. Plus, you don't want to hurt the run of the mill rich with just a few million in the market. Billionaires and the many multi millionaires use their investments as collateral to buy stuff. For example, Muskrat used his invested wealth as collateral to buy twitter and then went to hedge funds to ask them for money, also using his investments as collateral. Thus he bought Twitter without using cash. It seems to me it would be rather simple to just make it illegal to use your investments in this manner in order to avoid selling stocks which would incur income and thus taxation.
@AverageJoe1 saidTaxes are not punishment. Taxes are collected in order to carry out the legislative agenda set by Congress.
Punish the successful!!!
However, we are all waiting on your explaining how being successful and making more money than the next guy is immoral.
Think Medicare, Social Security and the Defense Department. That's the majority of the legislative agenda.
Someone needs to be taxed to pay for these things. It's not a punishment, just a reality.
@AverageJoe1 saidShould? Nah, the 50M people at the bottom have no money, thus the CAN'T pay taxes. What are you going to ask them for their fingernails?
I agree that we should take care of the 50M people who are struggling, but I think there’s more to this conversation than simply saying the wealthy should pay more in taxes. You've brought up the 1% 50% numbers before, and I've noted many times that these numbers are fake. One of the richest people in the entire world is Mark Zuckerburg and his salary is only $1 per year. So he's not even represented in the statistics you keep bringing up about who pays taxes. Rich people don't pay taxes, earners pay taxes.
@wildgrass saidThe rich have those too but their wealth helps bury those snakes better than others could.
Also, the ones who aren't rich often have snakes in their closet that aren't easy to wrangle. E.G. Graham Platner in Maine.
This is how Trump was able to bury cheating on his wife with a porn star during the campaign.
Post Citizens United, the 1 Percent's advantage in elections has grown exponentially.
