My questions, which are only simple questions, go unanswered by everyone on this thread. If student debt is forgiven, why not forgive other debts? Why stop there? (the first question). Then, 2nd question, why does one suggest that student debt simply be forgiven, but that other debt, if qualifying as 'forgivable' by the government, be erased by a process of bankruptcy....that is, why not just forgive it like the student loan is forgiven?
Why can libs not answer questions? What is all the fluff above??

IT IS, IT's CALLED BANKRUPTCY
......What can't your genius
Conservative mind not grasp?
@averagejoe1 saidSchool loans can be safely forgiven. It's not clear what other types of debt can be safely forgiven without negative economic ripple effects. So it's not that "only" student loans should be forgiven, it's simply that forgiving student loan debt would be highly beneficial.

What other types of debt do you feel can be safely forgiven?
@averagejoe1 saidNo one said "just" students debts should be forgiven. This is a strawman you invented.

Because you're Republican, you're using a version of "all lives matter" here, to complain about helping people in debt.
@vivify saidThis post title is a question, and you have here stated the question. So we are back to point A.

I am just asking, why is student debt singled out as something to erase from the student's life.....why not other debts? Years ago, a proponent of erasing student debt picked up that flag, but there are no other flags. Why just that one?
Note: Bankruptcy is not germane to this question.
@averagejoe1 saidI (and others) have already answered your question. People shouldn't be punished with debt simply for pursuing education.

@averagejoe1 saidHow is "Bankruptcy is not germane to this question"? Other debts can be fairly easily discharged in it, while student loan debt cannot.

The only question should be would forgiveness of student loan debt be beneficial to the economy or not? Since 92% of this debt is now held by the US government (https://www.investopedia.com/student-loan-debt-2019-statistics-and-outlook-4772007), forgiveness of future payments would really be akin to a tax cut on these individuals. I thought right wingers liked tax cuts?
@no1marauder saidIf the government wants to reimburse tuition then it should reimburse all tuition not just those who took out a loan and want it discharged or took out a loan and have not yet paid it back.

@quackquack saidWhy exactly?
If the government wants to reimburse tuition then it should reimburse all tuition not just those who took out a loan and want it discharged or took out a loan and have not yet paid it back.
Presumably those who paid tuition had the resources to do so. Those who had to rely on loans did not.
There is no logical reason now to continue to stifle the economy by imposing an excess burden on those who did not have the resources to pay for their education.
@no1marauder saidThis gets to the age-old 'From each according to their abilities', does it not? Is that Marxism or socialism,.... which concept are you espousing with your comment? Because, you are.

@averagejoe1 saidIf you want to abolish the student loan program, why not just say so?

@no1marauder saidThe government should not pick winners and losers. Either the government should reimburse everyone's tuition or it should tell people who took loans to honor their agreement. People who pay upfront either borrow from family members or use their own hard earned money that otherwise could be used somewhere else.

Your thinly veiled desire to cherry pick who get benefits is government at its worse and everyone should find it offensive and object.
@no1marauder saidI'd rather abolish the program student loan program then make it a lottery ticket where people see if the government decided its eventually free money for those who took it.

@quackquack saidStop being dishonest; you want to abolish the program. Period.
