Regarding AI: 'There’s so much money and it’s so big that there are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public. The American public essentially becomes a partner with the companies'
Did Bernie Sanders say that? Nope, Trump did. And me means it. Public ownership and control of the means of production. Where have we heard that before?
🤔
Call me crazy, but centralized government control of AI and corporate profit sharing by public ownership of these companies sounds a lot, lot closer to socialism than asking rich people to pay more taxes.

@vivify saidI think that it is you and your type who do not know what socialism is. There was a big thread on the topic recently, where several of your buddies identified Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland as successful socialist countries. The fact is that there are ZERO successful socialist countries. They are all failures. Their population suffers under a failed government and economy and it is only pride [the type you have] that stops them from changing back to a capitalist system.
Righties on this forum still don't know what socialism is. Or oligarchy for that matter.
@Rajk999 saidRight. That was a reflection of people not knowing what socialism is. Socialism is not what Sweden and Finland have. Sweden and Finland have healthcare and education paid for by the government. It is only Americans who think that is socialism.

Socialism is government control of industry. That's what Trumps trying to do, not Sweden. They know better.
@wildgrass saidThe Scandinavian states have a generous welfare programme which is only possble because of the high productivity and money generated by capitalism. Under real socialism there is not enough money and resources to finance such welfare.

I dont know what Amiercans in general think, but I do know that the DSA group, some of them are here on this site, want to end capitalism, and move the USA into full blown socialism like what exists in Cuba and North Korea. So you are mistaken that Trump is trying to do any such thing.
@Rajk999 saidWrong. There has never been a socialist country to begin with.
there are ZERO successful socialist countries.
Socialism aims to empower common citizens and *reduce* the power of oligarchs. Name one country claiming to be "socialist" that's ever done that.
You can't.
Authoritarianism is by definition the polar opposite of socialism. So Cuba, China, Russia, North Korea, etc. are not socialist, they just claim to be.
@vivify saidWell if you are going to redefine these standard terms, and use a definition you use with your buddies in your neighbourhood, then you will be arguing with yourself ... so you win.

However if we revert to the standard accepted definition of socialism, then lets take a look at Google AI, and maybe you will learn something ...

Q : What is the book definition of socialism and what countries are there that practice this kind of socialism?
A : Socialism is an economic and political philosophy defined by the collective or governmental ownership of the means of production and the distribution of wealth, rather than by private enterprise. Its primary goal is to ensure equitable distribution and meet human needs rather than maximizing profit.
Because socialism encompasses a wide spectrum of political and economic theories, exactly which countries practice it depends on the framework you use.
Marxist-Leninist (Communist) States
The following countries self-identify as socialist republics and are governed by a single ruling communist party:
- Cuba: Emphasizes central planning, social equality, and state provision of health and education.
- China: Officially calls its system "socialism with Chinese characteristics," utilizing a massive state sector combined with a market economy.
- Vietnam: Operates on a socialist-oriented market economy with a focus on poverty reduction and state-guided industries.
- Laos: Governed by the Lao People's Revolutionary Party with state-driven rural development and social programs.
- North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea): Follows the Juche ideology, featuring a highly centralized and state-planned economy.
Constitutional & Democratic Socialist States
Several other nations have words like "Socialist" or "Socialism" explicitly written into their constitutions, though they often practice a mixed economy:
India
Portugal
Sri Lanka
Tanzania
Nepal
Guyana
Nordic Model ("Democratic Socialism"😉
While places like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are sometimes cited by democratic socialists as examples of successful socialist ideals, they are practically free-market capitalist economies. Their governments instead practice a highly taxed social welfare model designed to provide universal services such as free healthcare, free higher education, and extensive public amenities.

Trump wants to use government funds to buy equity in private companies with the profits shared by the people. This is socialism.

Ah, a liberal that still can’t see.
Just about every regime came into power because of the promise of socialism.
Us conservatives have been trying to get you to see this…exactly what the far left is doing now. Free this free that, reparations ect
When they get in power all that is out the window.

@Rajk999 saidBingo. Does that sound like North Korea or Cuba?

By your own definition, no.
Because socialism encompasses a wide spectrum of political and economic theories, exactly which countries practice it depends on the framework you use.
The derivative socialist structures, like Cuba's, also stray from the from the original intent of socialism. North Korea is to socialism what Jehovah's Witnesses are to Christianity; technically from the same religion but so far off that other believers tend not to even count them.
@wildgrass saidLike vivify you are using your own definition of socialism. So nobody can carry on a decent discussion with people like youall when your words have meanings all over the place... its pointless.

Anyway a government that holds a small %, in the case of the US it is around 10%, stake in private essential industries is by no stretch of the imagination socialism. You are as usual delusional and twisted.
@vivify saidYes. Clearly you dont know anything about these countries. The government owns practically everything. From Perplexity AI

The Cuban government owns almost all of the means of production, making Cuba one of the world's most state-controlled economies. According to official Cuban statistics, about 75% of the labor force is employed by the state, though independent estimates suggest the figure is closer to 93%. State property includes "practically all production goods and services," with only a small exception for approximately one-fourth of agriculture that remains quasi-private.
Key facts about Cuban state ownership:
- Basic industriesThe government owns or controls all basic industries including healthcare, education, energy, and transportation
- Private sectorSome private enterprise exists (≈150,000 small farmers + 108,000 self-employed "cuentapropistas"😉, but it is heavily regulated and restricted
- Non-state sector trendThe small non-state sector has been "gradually shrinking" over the last 25 years
- Economic systemMarxist-Leninist socialism with nationalization of all means of production
In practice, while the Constitution states state property belongs to "all the people," the most important decisions are made by higher leadership levels and managed by public bureaucracy. The non-state agricultural sector, though existing, lacks full property rights—farmers don't have alienability rights and their use/usufruct rights are "seriously limited".
